FAQ

Australian grants, questions answered

Do we need to be a registered charity to get community grants?

No — and this is the biggest myth holding community groups back. Most Australian community funding asks for an incorporated association with an ABN, not charity registration or DGR status. Hobby clubs, cultural associations, RSL sub-branches and arts councils are all regular grant recipients without ever registering with the ACNC.

We're not incorporated — can we still apply?

Some programs require incorporation, so for many groups incorporating (a straightforward state-based process) is the single step that unlocks the most funding. Until then, some funders accept applications auspiced by an incorporated organisation — a larger local group applies on your behalf and passes the funding through. The grant's eligibility criteria will say which path applies.

How is this different from the not-for-profit/charity page?

There's honest overlap — many programs fund both. The difference is where you sit: this page is for groups that may have no formal charity or DGR status at all — a committee-run association, a hobby club, a local festival group. If your organisation is a registered charity or you're thinking about DGR-dependent philanthropic funding, the not-for-profit page covers those questions too.

What kinds of community grants actually exist?

Local councils run their own community grant programs (Brisbane's Lord Mayor's Better Suburbs Grants is one example). States run community benefit funds — like Queensland's Gambling Community Benefit Fund — for equipment, facilities and programs. Federally, Stronger Communities funds small capital projects through local MPs, and Volunteer Grants supports the people who run your group. Philanthropic funders like FRRR add regular small rounds for regional groups.

Our committee has never applied for a grant — where do we start?

Start smaller than you think: programs in the $1,000–$20,000 range have the simplest applications and the fastest decisions, and a first win builds the track record bigger funders like to see. Get the basics ready once — incorporation certificate, ABN, a bank account in the group's name and a simple project cost list — and most small applications become a one-evening job.

Do grants have to be paid back?

No. Unlike a loan, a grant is non-dilutive, non-repayable funding — you don't repay it and you don't give up equity, as long as you meet the program's conditions and reporting requirements.

Is the Grantiv grant finder free?

Yes — tell Grantiv what you want to fund and what your organisation does. Your strongest current match is shown immediately. A work email reveals the remaining redacted matches and keeps the search on file.

How does Grantiv match our group to grants?

Grantiv reads what your group actually does — your state, size and what you need funded — and matches you against current programs, scoring each on how well it fits. A hall-upgrade project surfaces different grants than a festival or a volunteer training program.

How often do new community grants open?

Constantly — councils and state funds run their own rounds through the year, philanthropic funders like FRRR run multiple rounds annually, and some corporate programs award monthly. Our free fortnightly email tracks what's currently open.

Does Grantiv apply for the grant for me?

Grantiv helps you find the grants that fit, and the Application Writer helps you draft the application with the grant criteria in view. You stay in control and submit through the official government portal — always confirm the current round, eligibility and deadlines on the grant's official page before applying.
